Soul II Soul said it best in 1989 with their song “Back to Life,” which is now quite possibly stuck in your head…I know it is stuck in mine! For those of you who need a refresher, the lyrics wisely state, “Back to life, back to reality…back to the here and now.”
This time of year, it is all about returning from the rhythm and feel of vacation to our routines and “real” life. Even for those of us no longer tied to the ebbs and flows of school years, there is a certain sense of freedom and a vacation-life feel to summer. As that winds down and we put our noses back the grindstone, we have a great opportunity to establish new, healthy routines for ourselves.
What do I mean by a healthy routine? How often you can fit in exercise, when are you able to prep to cook your healthy meals, and do you have any time to breathe are all components of a healthy routine. So is making time to spend laughing with friends and the occasional run to the neighborhood ice cream store or family movie night.
No life will ever be perfect, and no routine will be either. Please don’t seek out perfection in your fresh new fall start – focus on progress, not perfection. Kids have soccer practice 3 nights a week? Can you walk laps around the soccer field during practice, killing two birds with one stone? Or swing by a grocery store to shop while they are practicing? Try and think outside of the box (I *may * be trying to use as many clichés as possible in this letter) and make room for yourself in your routine.
As I always say, think about one small change that can start to change everything else. What is the one change you are going to make to your routine as this summer comes to a close that will help you stay on track for a healthier, happier you?
