Dietary fat does not make you fat. I’ll say it again…dietary fat does not make you fat! In fact, fat is a huge part of helping your cells grow and your body function. A boost in your mood, along with shiny and strong hair and nails are just a few added bonuses. In fact, did you know that eating more fat has been shown to improve brain function to prevent dementia and reverse type 2 diabetes?
Let me back up — so what exactly are healthy fats? Nuts and seeds, in all forms, are nutrient powerhouses. The mighty avocado is a long-standing rockstar, and coconut is chock-full of fist-pumping benefits. Unrefined plant-based oils, like olive oil, avocado oil, and flaxseed oil are both delicious AND nutritious. Healthy fats are not processed, nor refined. A label including the word “hydrogenated” is an indication of unhealthy, disease-causing trans fat. In fact, if you see the word hydrogenated, just drop the package right there in the aisle and run!
Back to the good guys — healthy dietary fats can be easily worked in to your daily meals, and their benefits are too numerous to list! Try roasting veggies with coconut oil. Toss your salad with a fresh olive oil and vinegar dressing combination, like peach vinegar with a basil olive oil, and have fun creating your own favorite combinations. Swirl some nut butter into your morning oatmeal, and enjoy some smashed avocado on toast with a drizzle of olive oil.
Give it a whirl, and then come over to our Facebook page and share your favorite way to add in some healthy fat to your life. You may just pick up some new ideas while you’re there.
